After a week, I will complete my 1st year into my
PhD program. A lot has happened during this year. I did a lot of work, learned
many new things and had a few failures. Here are a few things I’m struggling
with and would like to solve ASAP.

I see writing as one of my strengths. I can write for hours
without getting bored (I’m the type who writes a lot and then summarizes). Recently,
after my first committee meeting, I noticed that my committee members were not
satisfied with the amount of writing I do. Now I’m trying to document
everything for further use.

2. Time-management

My biggest struggle was, and still is, is time-management. There
are so many things I want to for my PhD and there are so many things I have to
do (for the department and research group as it is part of my contract). Sometimes
finding a balance was very hard. Besides my academic life, I’m learning Dutch
(it is a great way to show respect to the country you live in) and going to the
gym 3 times a week. Time passes very fast and I’m working on a way I can be
more effective. On top of all this, even though my program doesn’t require me
to take classes, I have to do doctoral schools, which include attending courses
or seminars on different topics.

3. Social life

As a foreigner, it is not always easy to blend in. having
the advantage of being a social introvert, I like the times spent with colleagues
as well as the time I spend by myself. There is a danger in socializing with
your colleagues. Even though you see them more than you see your family or
friends, always keep in mind that at the end of the day they are your
professional partners and you have to find the balance.

Currently, I see above mentioned 3 points as my current
weaknesses and working on fixing them. As entering my second year with more
confidence, I’m hoping to be more active and share my days here. What was your biggest struggle in 1st your of your PhD?

Below is one of my favourite pictures on this topic. It is clear that if we stop for a second, look back, and observe the situation, we can find an easier way to proceed further which we can re-use.

In the previous weeks, I conducted some experiments and was very excited to see the results and compare them with some examples in literature. The easiest way was to copy the results, paste them into excel and plot a graph of my interest. I filtered and worked on the data like this for almost 4 weeks. During these 4 weeks, every time I had to change or check something, I needed to open each excel, and remember the exact things I needed to conduct. Even though the latest version of excel and new computers are capable enough to handle thousands of lines of data, it was freezing very often that I had to close the task or give it some time to recover.

Last weekend, I was just very exhausted from going back and forth in different sheets (at home I do not have a second screen) so I decided to take the time to just write a Matlab code. I worked with Matlab for many years (in the following posts I will write about my weird relationship with Matlab) and knew that I could do what I wanted to do with some effort and few google pages. One other thing great about Matlab is that you get a free version if you are a student, and there are thousands of things that can be done with it.

It took me less than half an hour to write the code, import data, plot and filter. Yes, 30 minutes vs probably 6-8 hours (in total with re-plotting filtering, selecting relevant data etc). This was a great way to prove that I should just think about what would be the most efficient way, each time I have something to do.

What are your smarter ways to work more efficiently?

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-85133826939059443192019-05-18T08:00:00.000+03:002019-05-18T08:00:02.491+03:00Learning a new languageA new country means new adventure, new places, new people, new experiences and of course, new language. Some of us don't like to get out of our comfort zone and start in a country where they speak the language, some of us like it harder. None of it is easier, however, not knowing the language is a little more challenging. Besides that the exciting adventures, new country means a lot of paperwork and it is not very easy if you don't speak the language.

I've started my PhD in November and knew that I would start a Dutch course (Hasselt University is located in the Flemish part of Belgium). I didn't want to rush for it, but also not keep on postponing it since time flies. I spoke with the international students in my research group to see how and where they were taking the courses. Usually, there are evening classes which are pretty intense but seeing my colleges speak pretty decent Dutch motivated me to start

I was told by my promoter that I was going to teach 2 classes in the Spring semester. I waited for the semester to start since it was my first time teaching and wasn't sure if I'd have enough time for activities like this.

Eventually, in late April, I started a Dutch course in the evenings. It is twice a week and approximately 4 hours each day. Yes, it is intense, but the teachers do their best (thankfully) to make it fun and easy to follow. Now that a few weeks into the language course, I started enjoying it.

There are many proven benefits of learning a new language on the brain, which is another reason to learn a new language. Since I've been attending the course, I feel like my days are more productive and I can concentrate for a longer time. In Turkish, there is a saying that "one language is one person" so the more you know, the more door it opens.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-17554351381417516642019-05-15T08:00:00.000+03:002019-05-15T08:00:00.497+03:00Motivation letter / Statement of purpose: Part 2: For PhDGetting into graduate school / higher education is hard. Even though a few percentage of the University / College graduates prefer to go into grad school, due to limited paid positions, the chances of ending up in your dream institute can be challenging. Now that I am 6 months into my PhD, and after getting positive responses on my previous post on how to write motivation letter for Master's degree, I decided to write a post on tips I learned the hard way with a couple of rejections. Everyone's journey and background are different, every department has its way of selection, feel free to modify it depending on your needs.

Now that you have a master's degree and a little more research background, there may be too much to write. Even though it is always recommended to keep CVs, resumes, motivation letters as short as 1 A4 size page short, with all the experience and background, it may be hard to summarize it to 1 page. My motivation letter is a little longer than 1 page and a half.

This short description is a way to advertise yourself and catch promoters attention. I don't know how the review process goes in each department, but I would personally check the CV first and if it catches my attention, read motivation letter to see how this person describes the things they mentioned on their CV.

Here is how I structured mine;

1st paragraph I explained why I became a civil engineer and how my bachelor's degree helped me

2nd paragraph I summarized my accomplishments and projects and general skills I obtained in the master's degree

3rd paragraph I explained why I couldn't go into PhD directly (I took approximately 2 years off between my masters and PhD) and how I used this time, including brief information about my industrial job and highlighted the skills I improved that can help me get into the position I am applying for.

4th paragraph I explained how I conducted research part time because I just liked it better than my industrial job while looking for a full-time PhD.

5th paragraph summarizes why I want to go back to academia and pursue a PhD. Depending on the topic of the application I try to write a few sentences on how and why I am interested in those research areas.

The 6th paragraph is my final paragraph which I wrap up everything in the letter and give some final comments on why I can potentially be a good candidate.

Even though with 6 paragraphs I almost reach 2 pages, I wished I could write a small research interest paragraph. Depending on how relevant the topic is with your background, this paragraph can be as long as a page. After being the 3rd selected candidate for a position I really wanted, one critical comment the interviewers had was that they preferred to have a research proposal added that is relevant to the topic. After learning that, I start writing a short proposal to the positions I really wanted to get into, which I had some background.

As I mentioned, it is very hard to get a good PhD position, one thing I'd like to add is that sometimes some positions open for specific students already known by the department who proved themselves. Don't let this discourage you, but always keep it on the mind.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-9764828033263039632019-05-11T22:13:00.000+03:002019-05-11T22:13:00.558+03:00Is research background necessary? We come across tons of success stories every day. The old school ones were lucky enough just to graduate from bachelor's and land their dream jobs in which they spent decades. For younger ones, it is kind of struggle to find what to do for a lifetime career since there are too many things to choose from. I can see my classmates from university and grad school switching jobs very often.

All over the world, the age to start University or College is around 18-19. At that age, we all just want to have fun and don't really care about what real life will be. On one side, it is very cruelly to put so much responsibility on one's shoulder at a very young age, on the other side, after years of changes in education systems, apparently, this is the best way for higher education.

Most of the Universities don't require their Bachelor students to be involved in the research. Only the top students are given a chance to study further and go into good research institutes and learn how to research.

As an active student, being in only top 10 in class and having chance to do research at a very early age due to my language skills, I highly believe everyone should be given a chance to discover that special way of working. It is still not required in most fields to know how to research, however, a researchers way of thinking should be crucial for critical and creative thinking.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-48142832863453503712019-05-08T08:00:00.000+03:002019-05-12T18:50:15.178+03:00Why continue blogging? One of my proud achievement (personal satisfaction) last year was to start this blog. Sometimes I write 10 posts lined to publish in a few weeks and sometimes I have no idea what to write for a few weeks. I had major lifestyle changes and I wasn't very sure if it was worth to keep writing. Even though I am very passionate about research and academia, however, full-time PhD takes a good amount of my days. At that point, I realized that I am not writing this blog for someone or for something. It is a choice, a hobby not a job.

I tried to remember what was the main reason I started in the first place. I remembered my influencer. Yes, I am writing this blog for a bigger reason than just keep myself busy. Writing on a daily basis improved my typing speed and concentration.

My biggest dream is to be able to serve both in academia and industry, and as we have more educated peers now, maintaining this balance, in my opinion, is more important. For successfully obtaining both, my priority at the moment is writing, as much as I can.

If you're not sure about something, that you're doing for some time, and not sure if it is worth it, ask yourself these questions;

1. Does it make me happy?

2. Does it serve for a bigger purpose (personal or community)?

3. Will I have a better life if I quit?

4. Why did you start in the first place?

Everyone has different ways of looking at things, and if it just eating better, moving a little more, sleeping a little longer or something as small as reading 5 pages of a book, do it for yourself.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-5185141265866803572019-05-04T08:00:00.000+03:002019-05-04T08:00:04.223+03:00Lecture on HappinessAs a PhD student at Hasselt University, PhD students are part of the doctoral school, which is a mandatory series of lectures, courses etc on personal and technical development. Last week, there was an event named PhDrinks, which invites all the PhD students once a year for some socializing which includes a lecture and a reception. This year the lecture was on "Happiness at work" by the author of World book of happiness Leo Bormans. I am leaving a link of his personal Webpage here if you are interested in knowing more about him and his books.
I highly believe happiness comes from inside, sometimes from small things, sometimes from things that take longer. I personally don't find motivational videos inspiring, and highly believe action can bring happiness or whatever you call it (I am not promoting my University here - which has a logo saying Knowledge in Action, but maybe there is a reason why I ended up here). After an hour of the lecture, I realized that the moments I feel happy, I should just stop for a while and enjoy it.

After 1 hour of lecture, I felt a lot centred and was very thankful for the work I have and the people I am surrounded with. It reminded me of 1 thing I believe, if you don't like it, change it, if you can't change it, move on with something else!

I was surprised by the speed of feedback and the welcoming e-mail. The interview was scheduled for a week later.

On September 4, 2018, I had an interview with 2 young professors. They both were super friendly and welcoming. We spoke about technical things as well some nontechnical things. My interview went very good, I was feeling very confident and relaxed. For once, I felt like I said everything I needed to and was myself. At that time, I already was confirmed to Celal Bayar University, where I pursued my bachelors. I also mentioned that during my interview and asked them when to expect to hear from them. They said I will hear from them on the coming Friday which was September 7, 2018.

Around 11 AM on September 7, 2018, I got the good news. I was in tears after the e-mail since I was waiting for such a position. Since then, I am very motivated to work on a PhD with my current colleagues and promoters at Hasselt University.
The University I am pursuing my PhD in, Hasselt University. It is located in Hasselt, Belgium which is a city in Eastern Belgium.

Even though I found Hasselt University in a common academic job web page, after searching about it, I found that it has some very strong research groups. The group I am a member of, call Construction Engineering Research Group is one of them.

Even though I am only enrolled for 6 months, I cannot imagine a better work and research environment. The structure of a PhD is very fulfilling. As part of the PhD program, as a student, you're involved in doctoral schools, which has certain requirements you need to fulfil within the time of PhD. Some of these requirements are non-technical skills such as ethics, communication etc, however, some are very useful practice requirements such as a min number of publication requirements, conference requirements, teaching assignments etc.

As the first female PhD student, I am working towards accomplishing my goals and providing service to the university.

As I have not been actively posting for almost a year now, I recently checked this page and very honored to see that the blog is getting views from various places. My life changed a lot since last year and as a first year PhD student, I am very motivated to keep this blog going as part of my personal development. Since I am a full-time PhD student now, even though most of my blogs will be mainly on research, I am highly motivated in working with industrial collaborators and therefore will continue to post both about industry and academia. I have a very challenging and honoring 4 years ahead, however, the reality is only approximately 10% of PhD students find permanent positions in universities. For this reason, once again, I will be doing as much as both I can to have chances in both in a professional career.

I will be posting every Wednesday and Saturday mornings.

Once again thank you for following my blog.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-35035017454100839922018-08-18T12:29:00.002+03:002018-08-18T12:29:40.827+03:005 Major Differences between Industry and Academia JobAfter all you can see easily how much I like being in academia and industry and do not like feeling stuck in both time to time. In previous posts, I always tried to mention my point of view on this. As being super close to both, I felt like this had to be said;

- Yes it is rude, however, in academia you are surrounded by co-workers who have similar academic level of education which makes it a little easier to communicate with them. However, in an industry job you could be working with an engineer who graduated 30 years ago and doesn't care about today's technology. This will definitely something to remember.

- In research your main goal is to develop something that hasn't been done/published before, however in industry it all comes down to cost. And guess what, repeated solutions are appreciated because they are cheap and fat.

- In industry it is very rare to be able to measure your success level in terms of numbers however, in academia scientists found many ways of measuring their outcomes in numbers.

- In an industry job, you have to have an outcome at the end of the day, in academia finding out a way doesn't work sometimes counts as an outcome.

- Repeating and mastering some habits are key to fast and reliable success in an industry job, in academia you constantly have to renew your skills depending on your project or trend.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-74077634149150898152018-07-14T08:00:00.000+03:002018-07-14T08:00:08.182+03:00Structuring a day on a long period time offI am at a very special phase in my life. I recently married and moving on to a new life soon. I quit my full time job 2 months ago and working freelance for same company. I quit job to have sometime for myself and complete the paper work and necessary steps before I move on to my new life. I roughly counted how long I have until I can start a new job and it looks like I have 60 days to move to my new home and another 90 days until I can start working, which adds up to 150 days approximately. During this time line there are a few things I want to accomplish since I have plenty of time and not sure when I will be such free ever again. From today onward here is how I will be structuring my week day.

- 1 hour studying for a test I like to take for my career - personal goal
- 1 hour working on scientific papers - I have 3 lined up and I would like to submit them all before I start with full time job
- 1 hour for PhD and job applications - this usually takes a lot less but I would like to include writing a proposal and sometime to think about cover letters
- 1 hour of walking - it is very easy to stay in because of laziness
- Keeping track of my days
- Motivate myself - having plenty of time can lead to feeling useless so even if it is a few minutes, I'd like to think about how far I've come.
- Last but not least work for my freelance job - there are days I have to work 8 hours and there are days I do not work at all so this point is unlimited

The reason I wanted to make a simple TO-DO list without tiring and bother myself much is because I believe most precious thing we have is time and unfortunately we cannot store it or go back in time.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-60057782056637295072018-07-07T08:00:00.000+03:002018-07-07T08:00:08.855+03:00Spending a day on a new hobbyAs you've already noticed, I am such an engineer and I try to use engineering knowledge in my daily life. This can sometimes be boring, my hobbies are unfortunately only related to that. My mum is an artist and she is very talented, and being her daughter I have no idea how untalented I could be. Now that I have plenty of time for myself I tried to do some (easy) art.

The process was pretty easy. Paint the wood tray with white, until it looks flowless. To make that possible I painted the tray and let it dry for like an hour and repeated this whole day. Second step was sticking the special paper to the tray and painting with transparent coating.
So here are a few things I learnt from this day;

1. If you want to use your other side of the brain, there are unlimited options. Start with the easiest and cheapest option. Think about what you always wanted to do and what can be the beginning for the big dream.

2. I did this activity on a Sunday and I was on and off working on a paper. It was so relaxing to coat the tray as I took break every hour. And as I went back to working, I felt completely refreshed.

3. Once it is done, you feel accomplished.

4. You don't have to invest much, just look around and see what you have.

I highly recommend trying a new hobby to feel accomplished and relaxed.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-47811996076239284632018-06-25T08:00:00.000+03:002018-06-25T08:00:05.828+03:00Volunteering in a conference in your undergradI remember my freshman (1st) year in bachelors. All we cared about was passing the classes and enjoying free lessons. None of us had what to do after school, and none of us cared either since we had more than 3 years.

On my sophomore (2nd) year, I was going through some family financial problems which lead me to take charge of my life and start earning. At that time, and after having a terrible site summer internship, I thought going into academia was easiest and best path for me.

My passion and hard work helped me get a position and research funding. Beside my research work my advisor encouraged me to volunteer in 1 national and 1 international conference. Here is how my experience went;

1. In the international conference, I met a professor who then became part of my MSc committee in Texas A&M.

2. All faculty from my school recognized me and I built my very first academic network. This network later helped me getting references and getting paper work done easily. Besides that, every time something national or international was going on, I was one of the first students they called to.

3. During the national conference I met many recognized researchers, and one ended up being coworker of my dad from the 90's. You can guess how it helped me stand out in crowd.

4. I learned the research technical slang before even getting bachelors degree.

5. The vision and mission of the conferences motivated me to move forward in hard time in academia.

6. Never paid to attend those conferences and during technical sessions, I could attend the ones I like.

7. Got the goodies bag along with published papers.

These being said, I highly recommend every undergraduate student to take part in such conferences. I believe all academics and graduate students should help young researchers get involved as soon as possible. I think this is the strongest way to get students get involved in research.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-44986606529584490982018-06-23T13:27:00.001+03:002018-06-23T13:27:07.522+03:00How to use free time wiselyLately, I have a lot of time for myself since I am working freelance and wrapping up my life to start a new adventure. One struggle with having an unlimited time is that when you have a lot you want to do but you feel like you are not using your time effectively.

Here are some tips helping me to get through the day.

1. List down plans

It can be reading books, writing a paper, taking a test for certification or anything you've been putting off for when you'll have time. Be realistic, if you have limited amount of time off, plan accordingly to not overwhelm yourself, and also to not disappoint yourself. No matter what the reason is you have time off, take it also to enjoy your free time, life can get very tricky once you get busy.

2. Make a list of things you like to on free time

I believe this is as important as writing down your goals. If there are some books you'd like to finish or some serials you'd like watch make a list of these.

3. Define time slots

Now that you have 2 list, one for leisure and one for goals, see how you'd like to shape your day. Try to use a percentage like 40%-60%. 60 % of your time you put to your goals (min) and 40% of your time you can put into leisure.

4. Be flexible

Working throughout the day can be exhausting or you may be disrupted. Allow yourself some time to switch around.

5. Use time wisely

It is very easy to waste time when you have plenty of time. By planning right, and managing your time wisely, it could be a life building time.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-13553585360612849162018-06-17T08:00:00.000+03:002018-06-17T08:00:11.635+03:00Dan Brown - OriginDan Brown is one of my favorite authors. I find it very practical that he fits usually 24 hours into a 500 page book. His main character for the past few books, Robert Langdon who found body with Tom Hanks, is making reading easier to visualize.

Even though this book, Origin has been published last year, I finished reading the past January and here is my take away (no spoiler)

- It was the most realistic book - I love reading about his theories however, not knowing if they are right is a bit disappointing. In this book, he built his story around something we are living today.

- Power of science over religion - Even though I highly believe we all should be involved in science, religion is something very personal and it should be kept private without judgement.

- Barcelona - Most of the story takes place in Barcelona, luckily I had a visit to Barcelona a year ago and I could literally visualize the places as the book went further.

I only have one negative feeling after the book is over, which is that it is so hard to be satisfied by another book after finishing his. If you are looking for a book that will transport you, I highly recommend it, not only as one of his fan, but also as a researcher who is enjoying the latest technology.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-90177787284093808632018-06-16T08:00:00.000+03:002018-06-16T08:00:02.130+03:00Erasmus: Politechnika Krakowska (Crakow University of Technology)

Right after writing about Erasmus program, I would like to continue with my personal experience. I went to Politechnika Krakowska for my Erasmus program. It is a technical university located in Krakow, Poland. Before I started erasmus program, I was highly recommended to join this school because it is one of the leading universities in Poland.

I went for Erasmus on my 4th (last) year of bachelor's degree, on the Spring semester. For my case it was pretty risky because I had Fulbright scholarship for 2014-2016 which was starting that fall and I had no chance to fail. And an advantage was I had to take a very few classes.

In some classes we had the pleasure of being "Erasmus Students" meaning the lecturer cared only if we enjoyed ourselves and learned a bit of what was taught. And in the other classes we were sitting with full time students of the University and taught very seriously.

Speaking about classes, a few things I really enjoyed in Politechnika Krakowska is that they had the latest technology in lab or practice classes. I remember taking building physics class which is for heat isolation (we do not have that course in bachelors in Turkey). That course was very unique to me and the theory was a bit confusing, however, after the lab classes, when they showed what was being taught in lecture, it sounded a lot better. Another standing memory I have is that in a concrete class we went for beam bending test which was very interesting to watch as an undergraduate student. Even though I knew I would be a structural engineer, one other class I had to take was transportation class and again it ended up being one of my favorite classes. The course wasn't only theory, we had to make a real life project of a small town. First we had calculated the traffic rate (inbound, outbound etc.) and afterwards started working with a software called Visum. It pretty much visualized our hand calculations.

Last but not least, I found the love of my life in Erasmus, who I call husband now. Besides him, I have bunch of friends all over the world that I am loving to meet once in awhile.

If there is one best thing that can happen to you is Erasmus. Whatever your life is about, if you get the chance, go for it, no matter what it takes. If there is anything I can guide you with please feel free to let me know.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-83796250318000853322018-06-13T08:00:00.000+03:002018-06-13T08:00:06.179+03:00How freelancing job affected my life style?Soon I have to re-locate and change continents. For this reason I quit my full time job 5 weeks ago. I was responsible for two 60 000 square meter projects, for this reason I spoke with my manager 2 months before the date I was expecting to quit.

I learned from embassy that it will take me approximately 6 months to get work authorization in this new place. Assuming I will find a good job in 3 months, I have 9 months of free time. I have been independent way too long and thinking I will not have any financial and career income didn't make me feel good. For this reason I asked my manager if he would be supporting me to work freelance on one of this projects. This was a very risky decision. In an industry job sometimes project conditions change few times a day. I know myself pretty well and I was confident enough that I will be able to handle whatever is needed.

Here are the major changes that happened;

1. My concentration improved

This was something I expected pretty much. I made myself a small home-office in my parents flat. I just assign myself a task for the day and depending on importance, if it needs to be done in work hours, I structure my day around it. This affected also my productivity.

2. I started enjoying life

This was again something I was expecting but was a little worried that I would have to work less productively. Once I know what to do for each day, I know how much time I have for myself.

3. Emotional balance

Emotions effect concentration and productivity in my case. I am a lot calm now and hopeful for my goals.

4. Time management

Now I have time to go out and have fun, take care of myself and keep moving forward in my career and long term goals.

5. Personal Improvement

Time management has a huge impact on this point. I have plenty of time to read books I've been keeping off for awhile. I am starting new hobbies, walking as much as I can.

After experiencing this adventure only for 5 weeks, I am highly motivated to support that we need more freelance jobs and give people life style flexibility.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-5052528928934369922018-04-30T09:41:00.000+03:002018-04-30T09:41:28.595+03:00Study Abroad: ErasmusErasmus is a study abroad program within Universities across Europe. Each country gets funding from Brussels and it is divided among different schools and departments. To study abroad a semester, year or to go for an internship you actually get paid and get all the benefits of being a student.

It is very common in Europe to be part of Erasmus program. I recently came across a job posting for an internation firm in Europe that stated "Erasmus exchange is preferred".

I will not write about how awesome it is for your resume or CV, we all know every opportunity is life changing.

So, why you shouls join Erasmus?

1. Unlike any other continent, Europe is pretty close and many parts has dense population, for this reason you can travel across the continent within a short time for very affordable prices.

2. You meet people who think like you and who grew up on some other part of the world. I never thought a Norwegian would have similar view of life like I do!

3. You grow your family. Yes, everytime I am travelling somewhere my chances of finding someone I can meet or get advise is pretty high.

I would like to conclude by adding that not only it was one of the best experience in my life, I also was lucky enough to meet love of my life.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-70394434581529599452018-04-28T08:00:00.000+03:002018-04-28T08:00:07.541+03:00Why do we take some time off, sometimes? We all take time off from something we like to or have to do. This can be as small as not reading for a few days to something like not working for some months. I am currently getting ready for a my wedding and re-locating right after the wedding. I have to work until the last week of the wedding to keep myself financially safe, find myself freelance jon until I get work authorization in this new country and I have to adopt to a new adjective, being a wife, taking another surname, making a huge change in my life. While I am trying to do all that, I let go of some things.

I love writing here, I couldn't for sometime, I don't even think about it anymore.
I started gym but can barely go as the wedding date gets closer.
I have drafts of few article, I haven't even made time to proofread them.
I am following a few blogs on weekly basis, and haven't visited them in weeks.

Not doing what I mentioned above is enough to tear me down because I feel like I am not using my time efficiently. This feeling makes me feel less confidence. All of this changed recently when I came across a quote that said "take break instead of quitting". It summarized everything I am going through. I love doing all of the above, I am just at a very special phase in my life and I need to take somethings off my plate, temporarily. I know after the wedding I will have enough time to build great habbits and find path I enjoy.

If you ever feel overwhelmed, give yourself some time. Do what you really have to (don't give up on your health) and the rest will shape once again in time. We all are humans and we are emotional creatures. If there is one thing that will keep us above AI robots, that is our emotions.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-3059644636483213512018-04-11T08:00:00.000+03:002018-04-11T08:00:00.273+03:00Why We Need More Freelance Jobs?

ME (Master's of Engineering) is master's degree with no research and thesis involved. More classes are required for graduation and an extra design course is taken. A supervisor is required only to guide for which courses should be taken.

MSc (Master's of Science) is master's degree with research and master's thesis being required. A number of classes are required but not as much as an ME degree. A supervisor for research thesis is required.

Advantages of ME

- More advanced classes are taken.
- Preferred option for industry engineers.
- Sooner graduation.

Disadvantages of ME

- Not accepted for PhD applications in most of the countries.
- No research experience is gained.
- Reading and writing skills are not necessarily improved.

Advantages of MSc

- Research is introduced. It is usually in form of case study supported with literature review.
- Preferred for industry firms which has research and development development.
- Research related delays in graduation may occur.
- Writing skills are improved.
- Solid knowledge on literature review process.

Disadvantages of MSc

- Literature review can be challanging and overwhelming time to time.
- If there is no specific project, finding a gap in literature can be tough.
- Funding is needed even for an analytical research project.

At the end of the day, it is out decisions that make us who we are. Sometimes what we think is best is not best for us. I highly recommend an MSc degree if time and funding are not an issue. In close future it may open more doors.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-450321803630060672018-04-04T08:00:00.000+03:002018-04-04T08:00:04.405+03:00They all failed for success<span style="background-color: white; font-family: , , "blinkmacsystemfont" , "segoe ui" , "roboto" , "helvetica neue" , "fira sans" , "ubuntu" , "oxygen" , "oxygen sans" , "cantarell" , "droid sans" , "lucida grande" , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif , "apple color emoji" , "segoe ui emoji" , "segoe ui emoji" , "segoe ui symbol" , "hiragino kaku gothic pro" , "meiryo" , "hiragino sans gb w3" , "noto naskh arabic" , "droid arabic naskh" , "geeza pro" , "simplified arabic" , "noto sans thai" , "thonburi" , "dokchampa" , "droid sans thai" , "droid sans fallback" , ".sfnsdisplay-regular" , "heiti sc" , "microsoft yahei"; font-size: 14px; white-space: pre-wrap;">1. This literally means, sitting 8 hours a day. We all know how dangerous it is to sit for a very long time. We all know it is the new smoking. There are some solutions like stand-up desks or replacing office chairs with pilates balls. Lets come to the reality. How many of offices actually support those? Even if they do, most of us feel very embarrased to use those. Short term effects of "sitting too long" starts with back and body pains. We try to increase blood circulation outside work hours.

I wanted to get a gym membership this year to get in shape for my wedding and also to lose the 10kgs I still have from the time of my master's degree from Texas (yes, everything was big there and I never regret it).

Here's is what happened after I started going to the gym;

1. I no longer have back pain

I mainly do cardios and it is enough to sweat off the "poison". I believe this is one of my biggest gain because I suffer a lot from back pain.

2. I feel happy

Not only because of the increase of endorphine, but knowing that I did something for myself made me a better person.

3. Reduced stress

No matter how easy life is for you, we all have stress on daily basis with different intensity. After a tough day, tiring my body makes me a better person and I have good energy for the loved ones at home.

Whatever it is you like to do, just set a side 3-4 hours a week for yourself and you will see your life changing in every way.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5108030839296277401.post-3280714717453280942018-03-31T08:00:00.000+03:002018-03-31T08:00:28.693+03:004 Reasons why we need a side job?As you know I am currently working as a structural engineer in a design firm. It is my full time job and I make a good enough salary. Besides this, I am conducting research as time allows. There are a few things I wish I could do on daily basis and sometimes it is not possible.

I describe a side job as an ending project that increases excitement. If it is boring and "I have to do it", it is more of an assigned job. A side project should add something to both your social and professional career in my opinion.

The idea of a side job might mean;

1. An extra earning

Why not earn a little extra cash and save it for summer vacation? Or even something smaller like a present for yourself. Yes, but buying yourself that go-pro you always wanted.

2. Useful hobby

If you describe a side project like me, it will eventually increase your creavity.

3. Time management

By doing a side job, you can find a better work-life balance to increase your productivity.

4. A back-up plan

You never know what happens in life. You may have saving and plan B or even C but once shit hits the fan, it at least psychologically takes some time. Once you have something you can rely on financially and as a habby, this will make the situation easier until you make a realistic plan and take action.

Even though currently my only financial income is through my full time job, I am trying to add something to myself everyday that I can start using as a side job.
